Using NickServ

NickServ is our Nickname Services bot. NickServ is generally pretty straightforward to use, but for those of you more interested in its capabilities, this page is for you!

Registering
Nickname registration is one of the most basic features of NickServ, and certainly a function you should prefer! This allows you to "own" your nickname. To register your nickname, simply change nicknames to what you want to register, and type: /msg NickServ register [password] [email]

In this example, [password] is where you will put what you want your password to be (without the "[" and "]") and [email] would be your email address (again, without the "[" and "]").

* Note that you will need to register with your real email address, as you will receive a verification email after registering to confirm account creation.

Grouping
Grouping allows you to add new nicknames for your account. Your account is allowed to own up to 30 nicknames, which you can add to your main account using the "Group" command. To "group" a new nickname, you must first be identified to NickServ (via /msg NickServ identify [password]). Then, change nicknames to the nickname you want to add to your account. Now, type: /ns group [main-nick]

Where [main-nick] is the nickname you first registered to NickServ with.

Additionally, NickServ has a number of SET options, which you can set with: /msg NickServ SET Variable Options

Here is a list of options you can set with NickServ:

Set Variable Designation
EMAIL [newemail] Changes the e-mail address associated with an account. The e-mail address is used for password retrieval.
EMAILMEMOS [on|off] This will forward memos sent to your account to the email address listed on your registration.
HIDEMAIL [on|off] Prevents an account's e-mail address from being shown to other users in INFO.
QUIETCHG [on|off] Prevents services from automagically notifying you when ChanServ is used to affect your status in channels. When set to ON, Services will no longer send you messages of this nature.
NOMEMO [on|off] This prevents people from being able to send you a memo. If you do not want to receive memos, you can just turn them off for your nick.
NOOP [on|off] Prevents services from automagically opping you in channels you have access in. You can choose to op/voice yourself by using the OP and VOICE commands through ChanServ.
NEVEROP [on|off] Prevents others from adding you to channel access lists.
PASSWORD [newpassword] Changes the password of an account.
PROPERTY [meta] [data] Manipulates metadata associated with an account. To delete a metadata entry, specify the name and leave the value blank. Metadata can be any value. Example: SET PROPERTY URL http://www.chatspike.net/ or SET PROPERTY AIM SkydiverGoose
ACCOUNTNAME [nickname] Allows you to change your account name to any nick registered to your account. Your account name is used in various places as a name for you, such as INFO.
PRIVMSG [on|off] Causes Services to use private messages when talking to the user authenticated on this account, rather than notices.
PRIVATE [on|off] Hides various information about your account from other users in INFO. This automagically turns HIDEMAIL on.
SET ENFORCE [on|off] This will automagically change the nick of someone who attempts to use it without identifying in time, and temporarily block its use, which can be removed at your discretion. See help on RELEASE.
